Take theВ ‘thumbs up’ sign, surely a universal symbol of acceptance, of being pleased with something, of ‘OK’, and these days even more ubiquitously of ‘Like’ a la Facebook? Well, apparently not everywhere – as an example, it may even get you thrown into prison in Thailand, be warned. In the context of Facebook et al, why not a local customisation of icons and pages? We recently came across an example of Facebook icons that locals in the Caribbean region felt would enhance the local flavour of Facebook there: We’re not entirely sure what they all symbolise – anyone’s guess is welcome, as are anyВ other local twists on social media icons, or real-world gestures!
